A dark nebula in the constellation Scorpius, around 6,200 light-years away, prowling through the glowing hydrogen clouds of the emission nebula RCW 113 (also catalogued as Gum 55). Catalogued as SL 17 (Sandqvist-Lindroos 17), it is more evocatively known as the Dark Wolf, or Fenrir after the monstrous wolf of Norse myth. Unlike a bright emission nebula that shines by its own ionised gas, a dark nebula is defined by what it hides: SL 17 is a dense, cold cloud of interstellar dust so opaque that it blots out the light of everything behind it. Here it is silhouetted against the radiant backdrop of RCW 113, a vast star-forming region where the intense ultraviolet radiation of hot young stars sets the surrounding hydrogen aglow. The dust lanes etch the unmistakable profile of a wolf stretched across a field of Ha fire.

Imaged in hydrogen-alpha to capture the glowing RCW 113 backdrop that reveals the wolf's silhouette, with a short set of RGB frames for natural star colour. Captured across three nights from Sydney (Bortle 7).

Thanks I have quite a few data sets waiting but the ones I have processed have been excellent. I do not yet put any iimage on line as I have had many health issues and difficulties with software and hardware. I am a 73 year old learner with defective colour vision and barely 3 months using PixInsight and Photoshop cc so it is as steep for me as it is difficult to see stars in my letterbox of Bortle 7 city sky…

This dataset captures Sandqvist 17, also known as the Dark Wolf or Fenrir, a distinctive dark nebula silhouetted against the star fields of the Milky Way. The collection comprises 17.6 hours of total integration time, gathered between 2 July and 4 July 2026 using a Sky-Watcher 200PDS telescope paired with a ZWO ASI1600MM Pro camera on a Sky-Watcher EQ6 Pro mount. The imaging sequence includes 206 frames through a Baader 7nm Ha filter at 300 seconds each, supplemented by 50 unfiltered frames at 30 seconds exposure. This combination provides both deep narrowband detail of surrounding emission regions and broader contextual data. The dataset is available as a free download under a CC BY-NC 4.0 license, permitting copying, modification and redistribution for non-commercial purposes.
