PK 164+31.1 – The Headphone Nebula - Within the Sound… of Silence

PK 164+31.1 is a faint planetary nebula in Cepheus, formed as a dying star sheds its outer layers into space. Its red outer shell traces ionized hydrogen, while the softer blue-gray interior reveals more subtle structure shaped by the radiation of its central star.

Set within a wide and quiet field, the nebula appears almost suspended—contained, isolated, and separate from the surrounding darkness. A distant background galaxy off to the left offers a subtle sense of scale, hinting at the vastness beyond while reinforcing the stillness of the scene.

There is a feeling here of something present, yet distant… like a signal held within silence. The composition leans into that pause—the space between—where the subject exists not in isolation alone, but within the quiet that surrounds it.

Captured under dark skies at the Deep Sky West New Mexico site (Bortle 2) and processed with a starless workflow to emphasize structure and color contrast, this image aims to preserve a natural balance between detail and restraint, allowing the subject to emerge gently from the dark.
