NGC 6164 — The Dragon Hatchling

NGC 6164/6165, better known as the Dragon’s Egg Nebula, is a bipolar emission nebula in the southern constellation Norma. It surrounds the massive stellar system HD 148937, whose intense radiation and past mass-loss events helped shape the glowing gas into the unusual hourglass-like shell seen here. The nebula is roughly 4 light-years across and is commonly placed around 4,000 light-years from Earth.

At first glance, NGC 6164 resembles a planetary nebula — the kind of shell left behind by an aging Sun-like star — but that is not what it is. Instead, this structure was created around a young, hot, massive O-type star system, making it more of a stellar wind and ejecta nebula than a dying-star remnant.

In this image, the bright central region felt less like a static “egg” and more like something beginning to emerge. Anchoring on the upper dark void and following the darker central channel downward, the core takes on a twisted, caduceus-like shape — almost like a small hatchling curled around its own heart, marked by the central star. Around it, the larger teal and red shell becomes the fractured membrane of the Dragon’s Egg.

So for me, this became not just The Dragon’s Egg, but:

The Dragon Hatchling — caught in the moment between shell and sky.
