NGC 3324 — Gabriela at the Edge of Creation
NGC 3324 lies roughly 7,500 light-years away in the Carina Nebula complex, where radiation and stellar winds from young, massive stars are carving into a vast cloud of gas and dust.
The nebula is often called the Gabriela Mistral Nebula because its illuminated boundary resembles the profile of the Chilean poet and Nobel laureate. The likeness becomes especially striking in this closer view: the forehead, nose, lips and chin appear traced in light against the darker material beyond.
But the face is only part of the story.
Along the lower rim, pillars and ridges rise from the glowing wall like a miniature version of the famous Cosmic Cliffs. These structures are not permanent. Ultraviolet radiation is slowly eroding them, while the same forces compress nearby gas and may help trigger the birth of new stars.
For this image, the nebula was assembled from separate Ha/OIII and SII data, while the stars were rebuilt from the Ha/OIII master to preserve a fuller and more natural stellar population. That choice allows the stars to remain visible even across Gabriela’s bright face, placing her not in front of the heavens, but within them.
The result is both portrait and landscape: a poet’s profile drawn in ionized gas, standing at the boundary where old clouds are being sculpted into new suns.
