NGC 281 — Pacman Seeks the Power Pellet

NGC 281, better known as the Pacman Nebula, sits in Cassiopeia and is one of those objects where the nickname is almost impossible to unsee. The dark dust lane cuts into the glowing emission like Pacman’s open mouth, while the surrounding gas and embedded young stars give the whole region a busy, energized feel.

For this release I included two versions of the same field. Revision A is the RGB view, which gives a more natural broadband look at the nebula and starfield. Revision B is the narrowband version with RGB stars, and that is the version I chose as the final image. The narrowband data pulls much harder on the structure — the dark bite, the folds of dust, and the glowing shell around the core — while the RGB stars keep the field from feeling too synthetic.

The palette was pushed toward a bold warm/cool contrast rather than a strictly natural presentation. I wanted the narrowband version to feel like Pacman just grabbed the power pellet and lit up the whole maze.
