M78 — Ghosts in the Heart of Darkness

In the vast molecular clouds of Orion, light and darkness meet in one of the sky’s most atmospheric scenes. M78, also cataloged as NGC 2068, is a refection nebula roughly 1,350 light-years away and part of the immense Orion B molecular cloud complex. Unlike an emission nebula, M78 does not produce the blue light that defnes it. Young stars buried within the cloud illuminate nearby dust, whose tiny grains scatter their light back toward us. The result is the ghostly blue-cyan glow emerging from an otherwise dark and dusty landscape. Nearby NGC 2071 adds a second luminous presence, while smaller refection nebulae and young stars lie scattered throughout the field. But the darkness is as much the subject here as the light. Thick lanes of interstellar dust cross the region, obscuring the stars and glowing material behind them. Woven through that darkness are subtle rusty-red and brown tones from the surrounding molecular clouds, giving the field a complexity easily lost when M78 is presented simply as a bright blue nebula against black space.

Discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1780 and soon added by Charles Messier to his catalog, M78 is the brightest refection nebula in the sky. More than two centuries later, those illuminated clouds still appear like apparitions emerging from the surrounding dust — ghosts in the heart of darkness.
