Descripción

A narrowband view of the Dumbbell Nebula (M27) highlighting the layered structure of this planetary nebula: the oxygen-rich inner bubble surrounded by the hydrogen shock shell and faint outer halo.

The nebula was processed in an HOO palette (Ha → R, OIII → G/B). To preserve the internal stellar field and maintain the natural gas gradients, the nebula was processed starless first. Structural work (contrast and shell enhancement) was performed on the starless nebula before the stars were recombined.

Stars were reconstructed from the narrowband data using an NB-to-RGB star conversion, which produces more natural stellar color than leaving the narrowband stars in place while still remaining consistent with the captured data.

The resulting palette ended up looking suspiciously red, white, and blue — hence the nickname.

What I particularly enjoy about this view is the clarity of the oxygen cavity and the filamentary shock shell, along with the faint turbulence along the shell boundary that reveals the dynamics of the expanding gas.
