DWB 111 — The Propeller Nebula

Not every object in Cygnus gets a famous Messier or NGC number. Some just get a catalog entry, a nickname, and a shape strange enough to make you stop and look twice.

The Propeller Nebula sits in Cygnus, buried in one of the richest hydrogen regions of the northern sky. It is one of those objects that looks simple at first glance — two opposing blades, a faint hub, and a field full of stars — but the more you look, the stranger it gets.

This object is also cataloged as Simeis 57, and the full propeller shape is often split across multiple DWB entries: DWB 111 for one wing, DWB 119 for the other, with surrounding emission sometimes listed separately. That makes it a little less tidy than the name suggests. “The Propeller” is really just the bright, recognizable part of a much larger emission structure in the Cygnus X region.

The history is part of the appeal. Simeis 57 was recorded in the Simeis catalog of H-II regions from the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, while the DWB catalog came later from work by Dickel, Wendker, and Bieritz on emission regions in Cygnus X. Despite the familiar nickname, the nebula is still somewhat mysterious. Its odd S-shaped structure, thin filaments, distance, and excitation source have all been studied, but it has never become one of those fully explained showpiece nebulae.

Some studies point toward the powerful Wolf-Rayet binary WR 140 / HD 193793 as a possible source of excitation, even though it sits well away from the visible nebula. That leaves the Propeller feeling like exactly what it looks like: a strange piece of machinery half-hidden in the Cygnus star clouds, turning quietly in the dark.
