Markarian's Galactic Falls
Named for Armenian astrophysicist Benjamin Markarian, Markarian's Chain is one of the most celebrated galaxy groupings in the Virgo Cluster. Though not a true physical chain, its graceful alignment reveals a collection of galaxies sharing membership in one of the nearest great galaxy clusters, approximately 55–65 million light-years from Earth.
Anchoring the scene are the giant elliptical galaxies M84 and M86, the traditional gateway to the chain. Just beyond them, NGC 4435 and the visibly distorted NGC 4438 form the famous Eyes Galaxies, where gravity has reshaped one of the pair through their close encounter. The field is dominated by warm, mature elliptical and lenticular galaxies whose golden glow reflects billions of older stars. Amid them, the barred spiral NGC 4413 offers a welcome splash of blue, its younger stellar population and delicate spiral structure standing apart from its more ancient neighbors. Nearby, the giant elliptical M87—home to the first black hole ever directly imaged—reminds us that some of the universe's most remarkable objects can appear almost understated in a field as rich as this.
The title comes entirely from the composition. Rotated this way, the galaxies seemed to cascade across the frame like a celestial waterfall. It was that visual impression—not the physics—that transformed one of astronomy's most iconic galaxy fields into Markarian's Galactic Falls.
