ESO 217-25 — The Fighting Fish of Centaurus
The official nickname for ESO 217-25 is the Mermaid Nebula, but I couldn't quite make that leap. My ideal mermaid doesn't have a goatee.
Instead, I kept seeing the flowing fins of a Betta fighting fish, suspended in the constellation Centaurus. The longer I worked on the image, the stronger that impression became. The delicate filaments seem to ripple through space like fins in water, while the brighter red hydrogen along the edges gives the appearance of light catching the tips of its fins.

This remarkable object is part of the expanding debris from an ancient supernova. Thousands of years after the explosion, shock waves continue to excite oxygen and hydrogen gas, producing the ethereal blue-green filaments and crimson highlights seen here. It's a reminder that even the violent death of a star can leave behind something unexpectedly graceful.
Whether you see a mermaid, a merman, or—as I do—a proud Betta gliding through the stars, that's part of the fun of deep-sky observing. The universe rarely insists on a single interpretation.
