NGC 2170 — The Angel of Monoceros
NGC 2170 lies within a rich complex of reflection nebulosity and dark dust in the constellation Monoceros. Rather than appearing as a single isolated object, the region is layered with young stars, illuminated dust, and dense foreground clouds that create the dramatic structure crossing the field.
Blue-white reflection nebulosity forms the luminous wings of the “Angel,” while warmer rose and reddish tones surround the central dust lanes. The dark material is especially striking here, weaving across the brighter background in tangled filaments that give the region an unusual sense of depth.
This image is entirely LRGB data. Luminance was used not only to strengthen overall structure, but also selectively to enhance the red and blue components of the image, helping bring out subtle differences within the surrounding dust and reflection nebulosity without introducing narrowband data.
The result is a field of layered, illuminated cosmic dust — with the Angel of Monoceros emerging from within it.
