I pre-process individual monos with Graxpert -> BlurX -> NoiseX -> StarX, once I have 'clean' mono masters then I RGB composition, or pixel math into an RGB image. Then I begin stretching, saturating, etc. I dont really follow any guidelines here, just make a lot of saves and experiment. Then once I'm at around 80% of where I want to be, I save as TIF and send to photoshop for any masking to emulate HDR with 'inner core' or 'outer nebula' images to preserve structure in very bright sections (strech the data less and then save a 'inner core' version to be masked later on top of the 'outer nebula' area.) Then you can stretch the heck out of one image to really bring out the structure, even if you blow out the core. Then I send the finalized image into Lightroom for final lighting/adjustments/filters if I like.
