IC 443 — The Jellyfish in Faux RGB

IC 443, better known as the Jellyfish Nebula, is the expanding wreckage of a massive star that ended as a supernova. It lies in Gemini, roughly 5,000 light-years away, near Eta Geminorum, and its tangled shape comes from the blast wave running into uneven gas and molecular clouds around it. NASA/Chandra notes that the same explosion likely left behind a compact neutron star or pulsar near the southern edge of the remnant.

This object was first recorded photographically by Max Wolf in 1892, during the early era when photography was beginning to reveal faint nebulae that visual observing often missed. E. E. Barnard later found it independently, adding it to that short list of objects where the camera helped change what astronomers could see.

For this version, I wanted the nebula to keep the depth and structure of narrowband data without leaning into a loud narrowband palette. The data is 100% narrowband, processed through a faux RGB workflow, with the stars preserved while still linear before the starless stretch. The goal was a more cohesive blue/orange relationship — enough separation to show the shock fronts and filaments, but not so much that the colors start competing for attention.

What draws me to IC 443 is that it does not feel like a clean shell or a simple explosion. It feels torn, folded, and still moving — a ghost of a star written into the surrounding gas. The Jellyfish name fits, but to me this version is less about something floating gently in space and more about something ancient still carrying the force of the event that made it.
