NGC 4038–4039 — Last Tango in Corvus
In the constellation Corvus, two spiral galaxies are caught in an embrace that has lasted hundreds of millions of years. Cataloged as NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, they are better known as the Antennae Galaxies, named for the immense tidal streams of stars, gas, and dust pulled outward by the gravitational force of their encounter.
At their center, the galaxies no longer resemble the orderly spirals they once were. Their disks have been twisted together into a luminous collision zone, where compressed clouds of gas ignite waves of new star formation. The blue regions reveal young, hot stars, while the pink knots mark glowing clouds energized by their birth. What appears chaotic is also profoundly creative: destruction on a galactic scale becoming the birthplace of countless new suns.
The long, delicate arcs surrounding them tell the larger story. They are the remnants of former spiral arms, stretched far into space as each galaxy pulls upon the other. Those faint antennae make the violence of the collision visible, tracing matter torn from its original home.
This is not a brief meeting, nor will the galaxies separate and continue on unchanged. Their tango will eventually end with the two becoming one, leaving behind a single transformed galaxy and generations of stars born from the collision.
For now, we see them suspended between what they were and what they will become—two galaxies locked in a gravitational embrace, performing their last tango beneath the wings of Corvus.
